Gretchen and Maia

This is the story of Gretchen and Maia, mother and daughter of the great Terra sea. Our courageous humpback whale’s life changed with the birth of her baby girl. Maia, who is just three days old, is fifteen feet long and weighs about 2,000 pounds. Gretchen is beside herself with happiness, breeching and diving more than ever before. She wears the smile of a mother’s joy that is understood throughout the Land of Terra. Just as she protected Luis from the hungry orca, Gretchen will guard Maia with her own life, keeping the baby girl safe from harm until she is able to stand on her very own fluke.

You might think that only people love their children, but this is not the case. Mothers love babies and babies love mothers - all creatures alike. Gretchen is special because she shares her concern with other creatures as well. It matters not if they are different -  she eases a burden whenever she can. Perhaps we have much to learn from Gretchen, the caring mammal of the sea.
