This is the story of Dobie, Sarah, and Tink - all part of a most unusual family of deer. Tink is Sarah’s son and Dobie is Sarah’s brother, but the two bucks are more like father and son than uncle and nephew. Dobie has cared for Tink since the day he was born, watching over the little guy to keep him out of the trouble that most young bucks seem destined to find.
There are some things that Dobie does for Tink that are common among deer such as nudging the boy away from danger or sending him on his way to Sarah. However, there are other things that the elder buck must do to keep the little one safe. The three deer live near a winding creek that flows for miles and miles, but sometimes there are things in the water that just do not belong. If Dobie sees that the fish aren’t swimming just the right way or that the water has a different smell or color, he will guide his family away. When that happens, the deer drink muddy water from puddles because that is far safer than drinking toxic waste.
You might think that the things we do have little effect on those who live far away, but this is not the case. Litter can travel for miles and miles before being trapped in tree branches or making its way to our seas. Liquid waste flows through the water and seeps into the soil, changing the environment for all living creatures. We are all connected in the Land of Terra - my water is your water, our water is their water. Perhaps we are more alike than we think …
